What CHAS is

CHAS, the Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme, is a health and safety pre-qualification scheme. Clients and principal contractors use it to check that the contractors and suppliers they appoint have sound health and safety arrangements.

Applicants are assessed on how they manage health and safety: policy, organisation, risk assessment, method statements, training and competence, monitoring, and incident and accident performance.

Where applications commonly struggle

  • A generic health and safety policy that does not describe how the business actually operates
  • Risk assessments and method statements that are out of date or too thin to be credible
  • Competence and training evidence that exists but cannot be produced quickly
  • Accident and incident records that are incomplete
  • Renewal treated as an annual scramble

How we support you

Support is delivered by a consultant with BS 7858:2019 certification, SIA audit experience and a background in security operations, working directly with your management team.

Readiness review

We compare your current arrangements with what the assessment looks for and give you a prioritised list of gaps.

Policy, risk assessment and RAMS review

We tighten your health and safety policy, risk assessments and method statements so they reflect real work and stand up to assessment.

Evidence and application support

We help you assemble the evidence pack and complete the application, then support you through any follow-up questions.

Renewal

We help you keep documents and records current so renewal is routine.

Good to know

CHAS, SMAS Worksafe, SafeContractor and Constructionline are all members of SSIP (Safety Schemes in Procurement), whose members recognise each other’s health and safety assessments. Many clients accept more than one scheme, so check which one your target clients ask for before you apply.

What you get

  • A clear baseline of where you stand against the scheme
  • Policies, procedures and records written for how you really work
  • An evidence pack organised so it can be produced quickly
  • Help with renewals so the accreditation stays current
