What ISO 9001 is

ISO 9001 is the international standard for quality management systems (QMS). It sets out requirements for how an organisation plans, delivers, checks and improves its work — with a focus on consistently meeting customer and regulatory requirements.

The current version, ISO 9001:2015, is built around risk-based thinking, leadership involvement, and the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle. It applies to organisations of any size, in any sector.

Why organisations certify

  • It is frequently a tender requirement for public sector and principal-contractor work
  • It gives customers independent assurance of consistency and control
  • It reduces rework, waste, and the cost of getting things wrong twice
  • It creates a structure for improvement rather than firefighting

How we support you

Gap analysis

We review what you already do against the clauses of the standard. Most organisations are further along than they expect — the work is usually formalising existing practice, not inventing new process.

System design and documentation

We build lean documentation with clear ownership: scope, context, quality policy, process maps, risk and opportunity register, and the records the standard actually requires. No copy-paste template packs.

Implementation and training

We work with your team so the system is used, not shelved — including awareness training and practical guidance for process owners.

Internal audit and management review

We support your internal audits and management review, so non-conformities are found and closed by you before a certification body finds them.

Certification support

We prepare you for Stage 1 and Stage 2 assessment and support closure of any findings raised.

What you get

  • A QMS scoped to your operations and sized to your business
  • Process-based approach with clear responsibilities
  • Higher customer satisfaction and fewer recurring issues
  • Reduced errors and rework
  • A system you can maintain without external help
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How long does ISO 9001 certification take?

For a small or medium organisation, three to six months from start to certification is a common range, depending on how much is already documented and how quickly the certification body can schedule audits. We confirm a timeline after the gap analysis.

How much does ISO 9001 cost?

There are two parts: consultancy support, which depends on your size, scope and starting position, and the certification body’s audit fees, which you pay to them directly. We give a clear estimate after the gap analysis.

Do I need a consultant, or can I do it myself?

You can do it yourself, and many organisations do. A consultant shortens the route, helps you avoid over-documenting and prepares you for the audit.

Can ISO 9001 be combined with other standards?

Yes. ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and ISO 27001 share a common high-level structure, so they can be run as one integrated management system.
